This guest room is one of the most personal spaces in our home — and while it welcomes all who stay here, it was designed especially with my mother in mind. We call it Mother’s Hollow — a cozy, cocooned retreat wrapped in deep blackberry walls, vintage textures, and quiet heirloom charm. The name itself hints at something tucked away and rooted — a space that remembers, holds, and nurtures.

The Color Palette
Purple has always been one of my mother’s favorite colors, though she usually leans pastel in her own home. So this moody, grounded shade — Blackberry by Sherwin-Williams — is my way of gently nudging her into richer territory. It’s paired with Ethereal Mood on the trim and ceiling, a soft, earthy neutral that wraps the room in a subtle warmth. Together, they create a feeling that’s both bold and embracing.
Timeless Layers & Familiar Comfort
The bed’s turned posts and timeless silhouette feel like comfort personified — a little nostalgic, a little storybook. Linen bedding and neutral drapery keep the palette balanced, while layers of oak wood and brass bring quiet warmth. Details like the warm metal curtain rod, vintage-style lamps, and future family photos add to the sense of soul.
And while the space is still evolving, I imagine it filled with black-and-white portraits of her parents, grandparents, and loved ones who’ve passed. Memory anchors this room.
A Quiet Gamble
The rug was my boldest choice — moody, with just a hint of storybook whimsy. But that feels right here. After all, my mother’s favorite lamp is a monkey in a vintage coat — not something you'd expect, but exactly the kind of detail that makes a space feel loved.
And if—or when—this concept becomes a reality, I’ll be sure to share photos of the finished space.
