Some design trends come and go—but certain ideas stick around for a reason. I recently read an article from Homes & Gardens called “6 Old-Fashioned Decorating Techniques Designers Still Follow”, and honestly… I couldn’t agree more.
As the designer behind Homebody Designed, my mission is to create cozy, functional, personalized spaces that truly feel like home. These six classic principles reflect exactly the kind of design I believe in—and stand behind every day.

1. Intimate Spaces Over Open Plan Layouts
I’ve been waiting for this shift. Open-concept layouts have their place, but they often sacrifice privacy, function, and intentional design.
Personally, I love semi-open layouts—where the kitchen and living space connect, but the dining room still feels like its own moment. Removing walls isn’t always the best answer.
And let’s be honest—a wall isn’t just a boundary. It’s a canvas for art, shelving, and personality. Full openness isn’t always worth the trade.
2. Respect the Era and Architecture
This one really resonates with me. Every home has a story—and ignoring its architecture can leave a space feeling disconnected.
It’s not about strict rules—it’s about honoring the home’s character. Whether I’m working with a historic bungalow, a mid-century ranch, or a modern build, respecting those bones helps the design feel grounded and cohesive.
3. Follow Color Theory—Then Make It Personal
I love color theory. It helps create balance and flow—a room feels grounded when colors mirror the world around us. Think dark floors, medium walls, light ceilings. It works because it feels natural.
But here’s the thing: “natural” is personal. Maybe you feel most at home surrounded by rich, moody tones, or maybe you crave soft, airy hues. Either way, color should support how you want to feel—not just follow a formula.
That’s why I love creating spaces that feel like they’re hugging you—comfort first, always.
4. Keep It Simple, Keep It Timeless
There’s a reason less is more never goes out of style. It’s easy to over-design when you’re excited, but simplicity gives your space room to breathe—and lets your personality and priorities shine without distraction.
5. Let What You Love Lead the Way
This is at the heart of everything I do with Homebody Designed. Your home should reflect you—not trends, not social media, not someone else’s Pinterest board.
My job isn’t to impose a look. It’s to understand what makes you feel at ease, supported, and inspired—and bring that to life in a way that’s functional and beautiful for your daily routine.
6. Use Art Wherever You Can
Even in the most minimal space, one meaningful piece of art can completely transform a room. Whether it’s a photo, painting, textile, or something handmade, art adds depth and personality. It doesn’t have to be expensive—it just has to matter to you.
Final Thoughts On Classic Design Principles
These aren’t outdated ideas—they’re just thoughtful ones. Good design doesn’t always need to be groundbreaking. Often, the most lasting, comforting, and effective design choices are the ones that have stood the test of time.
That’s how I approach every project with Homebody Designed—because at the end of the day, it’s your home. And it should feel like home.
