I recently came across an article about “Shelf Styling Mistakes” that designers are supposedly tired of seeing. While I understand where lists like these come from, I don’t always agree—and here’s why.

At Homebody Designed, I believe your home should reflect you—not just what’s trending, or what someone online says is “correct.” If your shelves are filled with family photos, keepsakes, or things that make you smile, that’s not a design mistake—it’s personality. It’s comfort. It’s home.

Why “Mistakes” Aren’t Always Wrong

Sure, good design can make a space feel polished, balanced, and intentional. But I firmly believe design should support life—not edit it out.

Your shelves tell a story. Whether it’s travel souvenirs, family photos, vintage finds, or that quirky collection you love—those pieces bring character and warmth to your space.

Trends Will Come and Go

Design trends will always change, but your home should be grounded in what feels meaningful to you—not chasing approval or fitting someone else’s idea of perfect.

That doesn’t mean you can’t tweak or refresh your shelves. But it starts with your story, your comfort, your energy.

Your Turn: Do You Style for You—or for Others?

I’d love to know—when it comes to styling your shelves, do you design for yourself? Or do you feel pressure to follow the latest trends?
